The Lie-Størmer Center for Fundamental Structures in Computational and Pure Mathematics was officially opened on January 17, 2024, at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.
The afternoon ceremony at ILP Didaktikken began with UiT Rector Dag Rune Olsen welcoming guests, followed by a presentation on the center's vision by Co-Directors Cordian Riener and Hans Munthe-Kaas. The highlight was a popular science lecture by Simon Singh, author of 'Fermat's Last Theorem', titled 'From Fermat's Last Theorem to The Simpsons'.
Earlier in the day, NRK recorded an episode of 'Abel's Tower' at the University Library, bringing national attention to the new mathematics center.
The Lie-Størmer Center honors the legacy of Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie and physicist Carl Størmer, establishing a new Norwegian center for basic mathematics research, research schools, and activities to benefit the entire Norwegian mathematics community.
